ABFF Masterclass: The Art of Emotional Writing
Jun 14, 2025
From: 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Writers and storytellers interested in deepening their emotional impact on screen are invited to take part in a screenwriting-focused workshop at NYFA Miami in South Beach. ABFF Masterclass: The Art of Emotional Writing will be held on Saturday, June 14, as part of the American Black Film Festival’s educational offerings.
Led by Randall Dottin, Chair of the Screenwriting Department at the New York Film Academy and recipient of the 2022 ABFF Award for Best Web Series, the session explores techniques for creating emotionally resonant scenes that connect with audiences. Participants will engage in writing exercises, view curated short film clips and take part in guided discussions that emphasize the importance of emotion as a driving force in storytelling.
The workshop is designed for writers at any stage who want to move beyond facts and plot to focus on the emotional core of their work. Dottin brings a wealth of experience as both a filmmaker and educator, with a portfolio that spans fiction, nonfiction and award-winning short form content.
