AfriKin Artist Talk and Book Signing
This event has passed.
AfriKin Talk: Familiar Strangers at the Scott Galvin Community Center on Saturday, December 7, invites guests to a thoughtful evening exploring humanity’s shared bonds through art. Part of the AfriKin Art Fair 2024, themed Threads of Life in Fragments of Time, this talk aims to illuminate the profound connections that transcend borders, cultures and experiences. Anchored by the theme of interconnectedness, Familiar Strangers will examine how art serves as a conduit for empathy, understanding and global solidarity.
The evening includes a panel discussion featuring artists and thought leaders who will explore how invisible threads link us as “familiar strangers,” reflecting on how art captures these intangible connections. Key topics include “The Thread’s Identity,” which looks at the unseen bonds that shape our perceptions; “Fragments of Time,” exploring art as both a historical record and a vision of the future; and “Global Challenges,” discussing how art represents and responds to the struggles of nations in conflict, from Haiti to Sudan.
This event will also feature a book signing with artists Chukes and Angèle Etoundi Essamba. Chukes will sign Identity Theft, a work examining personal and collective identity, while Essamba will sign her book Everything is Connected, a reflection on the ties binding us all.
With a mix of presentations, panel discussions and an interactive Q&A session, Familiar Strangers provides an open space for meaningful dialogue, encouraging attendees to reflect on their role in supporting global communities through art and fostering a more compassionate world.
