Celebrate the enduring legacy of 20th-century Black musicians at Afro Blue: MB Arts in the Parks. On Sunday, November 3, Gentry Isaiah George presents his latest work, Roots & Rhythms, at the Miami Beach Bandshell. This captivating performance reimagines the Jazz standard "Afro Blue," as interpreted by Abbey Lincoln and Mongo Santamaria, weaving together biography, social history, music and dance.
George's Zest Collective dance troupe pays homage to the resilience and brilliance of musical pioneers who created compelling art in the face of adversity. A Juilliard graduate and former dancer with Ailey II and the Dance Theatre of Harlem, George is a Level 1 YoungArts award recipient and currently a professor at Miami Dade College’s New World School of the Arts.
Commissioned by Miami Light Project and presented free to the public by the Rhythm Foundation and the City of Miami Beach, this hour-long performance is a soulful tribute to musical history.
