An Evening with Ketanji Brown Jackson

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson brings her remarkable life story and insights to Miami readers in an intimate literary event. An Evening with Ketanji Brown Jackson takes place on Monday, March 10 at Miami-Dade College's Wolfson Campus in Downtown Miami, presented by the Books & Books Literary Foundation and Miami Book Fair.

The event celebrates Justice Jackson's new memoir, LOVELY ONE (Random House, $35), which chronicles her groundbreaking journey as the first Black woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Named Ketanji Onyika, meaning "Lovely One", based on a suggestion from her aunt who served in the Peace Corps in West Africa, Justice Jackson's memoir traces her family's ascent from segregation to her historic confirmation within a single generation.

Readers will gain perspective on how Justice Jackson's educator parents instilled pride in her heritage from birth, and how she developed her voice as a young student leader and orator. The memoir details her academic achievements at Harvard, where she graduated magna cum laude while participating in musical theater, improv and student organizations.

LOVELY ONE offers both professional and personal insights, revealing the challenges of advancing in the legal profession as a Black woman and balancing a demanding career with marriage and motherhood. Justice Jackson's journey includes service as a law clerk for three federal judges (including Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer), work as a private sector attorney, roles with the U.S. Sentencing Commission and experience as a federal public defender before her judicial appointments.

Prior to her historic Supreme Court confirmation in 2022, Justice Jackson served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia (appointed by President Barack Obama in 2012) and was elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2021 by President Joseph Biden.
