An Evening with Kiera Wright-Ruiz and Kia Damon
Feb 21, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Gain insight into how cultural heritage can shape culinary traditions through an exploration of recipes, personal narratives and the connections they forge. On Friday, February 21, celebrated writer and recipe developer Kiera Wright-Ruiz shares her latest work, My (Half) Latinx Kitchen: Half Recipes, Half Stories, All Latin American, at Books & Books in Coral Gables.
Wright-Ruiz delves into the complexities of growing up with a combination of Latinx and Asian backgrounds, reflecting on how foster families, grandparents and a variety of caregivers introduced her to a wide range of flavors and traditions from across Latin America. Guided by moderator Kia Damon, a Florida-born chef and food writer, the conversation will highlight how these influences come together in a collection of 100 inventive recipes and essays that trace her personal journey. From Ecuadorian Seco de Pollo to Pandan Coconut Flan, Wright-Ruiz’s cookbook blends vibrant Latin American flavors with reflections on belonging and self-discovery.
Admission is free, with books available for purchase during the event.
