An Evening with Robert F. Fieseler
Jun 27, 2025
From: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Explore a hidden chapter of Florida’s past with acclaimed journalist and author Robert F. Fieseler at Books & Books in Coral Gables. On Friday, June 27, Fieseler will discuss his powerful new book, American Scare: Florida’s Hidden Cold War on Black and Queer Lives (Dutton, $34).
This eye-opening event delves into Fieseler’s investigation of the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee—infamously known as the "Johns Committee"—which targeted Black activists and LGBTQ individuals during the mid-20th century. Drawing on newly decoded primary source documents, American Scare reveals how anti-communist rhetoric was used to justify widespread, state-sanctioned persecution.
Presented by Books & Books and the Books & Books Literary Foundation, the event is free and open to the public. Attendees will hear firsthand from the Edgar Award-winning author of Tinderbox and National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association Journalist of the Year. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
Fieseler’s discussion offers a compelling look at historical injustices and their echoes in today’s social and political climate—an essential conversation for anyone interested in Florida history, civil rights or social justice.
