Cab & Blanche Calloway in Miami
This event has passed.
Explore the local legacy of jazz legends Cab and Blanche Calloway during an evening of music, storytelling and history at Sweat Records. Cab Blanche Calloway in Miami takes place on Saturday, April 26, and is the second installment in a three-part series highlighting the Harlem Renaissance’s impact on Miami.
Presented in partnership with Black Miami-Dade, the event features historian and Black Miami-Dade founder Nadege Green, who will lead a conversation on the lives and contributions of the Calloway siblings. While Cab Calloway gained national recognition as a celebrated jazz bandleader, his sister Blanche left a distinct mark on Miami’s cultural history—becoming the first African-American woman to DJ on Florida radio and the first Black woman to vote in the city.
Special guest Bea Hines, veteran Miami Herald journalist and personal acquaintance of Blanche Calloway, will also join the discussion to share reflections and memories.
This program is part of a larger tribute marking the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance and is supported by the Knight Foundation.
