Explore the rich cultural heritage of Cuban film with the Cuban Cinema Series, presented by Miami Dade College (MDC) in partnership with the Miami Film Festival. This exciting series will showcase six iconic Cuban films at the newly renovated Koubek Center, located in the heart of Little Havana. Curated by esteemed film critic Alejandro Ríos, who launched the series in 1993, each screening will feature notable guests, including filmmakers, alongside live music and refreshments available for purchase.
The series kicks off on Thursday, December 5 with the screening of Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos), a hilarious and thought-provoking zombie comedy directed by Alejandro Brugués. Set in contemporary Havana, Juan of the Dead offers a satirical take on Cuban society. When a mysterious outbreak turns people into zombies, the Cuban government blames it on capitalist dissidents. Amidst the chaos, two unemployed slackers, Juan and Lázaro, seize the opportunity to start a zombie-killing business. This darkly comic film blends horror, satire and social commentary, exploring themes of corruption, bureaucracy and the human condition.
Admission is free for all films in the series.
