Apr 10, 2025
Starting: 7:30 PM
Cuban-American musicians created a distinctive sound in 1960s and 70s Miami that continues to influence the city's cultural identity today. El Sonido de Miami screens on Thursday, April 10 at the Miami Beach Bandshell as part of the 42nd annual Miami Film Festival lineup.
This documentary serves as a cultural time capsule, exploring how Cuban immigrants established their identity in Miami while adapting to American life without abandoning their cultural roots. The film is anchored by producer Eloy Cepero's extensive LP collection and features carefully selected archival footage that reconstructs the Miami of the 1960s and 1970s.
Viewers will discover the stories behind influential musicians, producers and groups that shaped this distinctive sound, including Los Jovenes del Hierro, The Ideals, Conjunto Universal, Coke, Antiques, Pearly Queen, Kracker, The Judge's Nephews, Willy Chirino, Miami Sound Machine, Clouds and Grupo Alma.
This Spanish-language world premiere will be attended by producer Eloy Cepero and director Emilio Oscar Alcalde, offering audiences a chance to engage with the creative minds behind this musical exploration of Miami's cultural evolution.
