FREEDUMB: Freedom for Dummies
Through Feb 28, 2025
From: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Embark on an eye-opening journey exploring the connections between labor, freedom and justice through contemporary art. FREEDUMB: Freedom for Dummies, presented by Afrikin at the Scott Galvin Community Center, runs from Feb 1 through 28, aligning with Black History Month's theme of African Americans and Labor.
The exhibition traces the evolution of freedom and labor rights from historical struggles to contemporary challenges, featuring works across multiple mediums including paintings, sculptures, photography and multimedia installations. Through these diverse art works, the showcase examines how work and liberation have shaped American society, while addressing ongoing conversations about equity and representation in the workforce.
Visitors can explore how artists interpret and challenge traditional notions of freedom, presenting it not as a fixed concept but as an ever-evolving ideal influenced by historical context and lived experiences. The exhibit also highlights the shared human experience, exploring universal struggles and triumphs that link the history of Black Americans with broader questions about freedom and labor. It invites viewers to consider what it truly means to be free and how art can bridge communities in sparking conversation and inspiring action.
The Scott Galvin Community Center welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout February.
