From Residue to Resource: Transforming Sugarcane Waste
This event has passed.
Explore a new perspective on sustainability with From Residue to Resource: Transforming Sugarcane Waste into New Materials, a hands-on workshop at Moonlighter FabLab on Saturday, December 7. This event, led by the Bagaceira Project, centers on the potential of sugarcane bagasse - an abundant, often discarded byproduct of Florida’s sugarcane industry - to be reimagined as eco-friendly materials.
In the morning session, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of bio-based materials and circular design, with insights into biodegradable and compostable alternatives. Attendees will then tour the Bagaceira Project’s material library, exploring samples created from sugarcane bagasse and other natural binders like algae, plant starches and citric acid. Hands-on experimentation follows, allowing participants to blend bagasse with natural binders to create custom materials, from bioplastics to fiber composites.
After a lunch break, the afternoon will focus on collaborative design and construction. Participants will brainstorm and plan a group installation, utilizing the materials crafted in the workshop. Using both hand tools and makerspace equipment, including a laser cutter, the group will transform their materials into a cohesive art piece.
The day concludes with a public exhibition from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. showcasing the materials created and offering a chance for visitors to explore the library of bagasse-based bioplastics, fiberboards and mycelium composites. This final exhibit emphasizes the potential of natural resources in sustainable design. The event is supported by The Puffin Foundation and Moonlighter FabLab.
