The Deering Estate presents its annual Contemporary Currents series, featuring a new exhibition titled GARDEN by Gustavo Matamoros (Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence, 2024) in collaboration with Robert Thiele. This exhibition will be on display from April 28 to July 20, during regular Deering Estate hours (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.).
Contemporary Currents integrates contemporary art with the historic collections and settings of the Deering Estate. Each year, a past or current Artist-in-Residence is selected to showcase their work on the second floor of the Richmond Cottage for a designated period.
GARDEN offers a unique sensory experience. Standalone sculptures and sound installations will be integrated into the natural ambiance and furnishings of The Garden Room, a wooden alcove inside the Richmond Cottage. This innovative exhibit invites viewers to experience the space in a new way, fostering a dialogue between contemporary artistic expression and the Deering Estate's rich history.
Gustavo Matamoros, a renowned composer and sound artist, is known for his ability to capture the essence of natural soundscapes. Through field recordings, improvisations and sound manipulation, Matamoros reveals hidden aspects of a space and its environment.
Robert Thiele, a visual artist, educator and curator, creates thought-provoking sculptures and paintings that explore themes of containment and revelation. His work often plays with geometric and organic shapes, inviting viewers to engage in the interplay between the revealed and the concealed.
