Explore the intersection of art, activism and environmental awareness at the Shady Speaker Series presented by Hampton Art Lovers in partnership with GeoAg Institute. This event is part of the Under a Simple Tree: The Canopy Policy Project and features the artwork of Brandon Clarke. Hosted at Green Space Miami, the series explores the growing trend among African Americans to reconnect with agrarian roots and address the lack of shade in urban communities. With Miami heating up, it's crucial to discuss the importance of trees in beautifying neighborhoods, improving public health and fostering community gatherings.
The Shady Speaker Series features talks by prominent figures, including:
- June 18 - Marvin Dunn from Teach The Truth Garden (Overtown)
- July 16 - Miami Dade County Conservation Efforts
These sessions will highlight innovative agricultural methods such as GeoAg, which involves growing plants in rocks with minimal soil and fertilizers. This technique offers a resource-efficient way to cultivate crops, especially in urban areas dominated by concrete and asphalt. Attendees will gain insights into how urban agriculture can mitigate the urban heat island effect and improve air quality in low-income neighborhoods.
Through Brandon Clarke's evocative artwork, the exhibition underscores the significance of shade trees in Miami-Dade, intertwining their stories with the communities they serve. Hampton Art Lovers aims to spark meaningful conversations about the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of tree canopy disparities. This project not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also calls for action to address the challenges faced by under-resourced neighborhoods.
