Delve into the the Caribbean's influence on the Harlem Renaissance at a free panel discussion presented by The Wolfsonian - FIU on Sunday, June 23. Drawing inspiration from the museum's current Silhouettes exhibition, Harlem Renaissance and the Tropics explores how Caribbean culture and imagery shaped the artistic movement.
The talk begins with a keynote presentation by art historian Samantha Noël, who will discuss how American artists like Aaron Douglas and Josephine Baker used "tropical aesthetics" to shape Black modernity. Following the talk, attendees can enjoy a reception and view the Silhouettes exhibition. The day concludes with a panel discussion featuring FIU faculty members, who will offer fresh perspectives on the connections between the Harlem Renaissance, the tropics and the exhibition's featured works. Panelists include Alexandra Cornelius from the History and Women's Studies Department, Heather Russell from the English Department, Chantalle Verna from the History Department, and moderator Shawn Christian from the English Department. The schedule includes Dr. Noël's talk from 11:00 a.m. to noon, an exhibition viewing and reception from noon to 1:00 p.m., and the faculty panel from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
