Harlem Renaissance Book Club: Mules and Men
This event has passed.
Explore the rich cultural heritage of the Harlem Renaissance through a book club discussion at The Wolfsonian–FIU. This program is the final installment of a three-part series inspired by the museum's current exhibition, Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance.
The event takes place on Saturday, May 18, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., and focuses on Zora Neale Hurston's groundbreaking work, Mules and Men. This ethnographic collection, compiled by Hurston, offers a window into African American folklore and cultural traditions. FIU English professor Shawn Christian will facilitate the discussion, guiding participants in exploring the themes and significance of Hurston's work within the context of the Harlem Renaissance.
This book club series, co-sponsored by FIU's College of Arts, Sciences & Education (CASE) and Department of English, previously explored foundational texts of the movement, including Alain Locke's "The New Negro: An Interpretation" and Claude McKay's "Banjo."
