Kayak Clean Up at Matheson Hammock
May 18, 2025
Starting: 9:30 AM
Combine outdoor recreation with environmental stewardship during a guided kayak cleanup in one of Miami’s most scenic coastal parks. The Kayak Clean Up, presented by Miami Waterkeeper in partnership with Miami EcoAdventures, takes place on Sunday, May 18 at Matheson Hammock Park.
This free volunteer event focuses on removing marine debris from the park’s waterways and surrounding mangrove habitats. Participants will navigate the area by kayak during a two-hour guided cleanup led by Miami Waterkeeper staff. Registration includes the use of a kayak, paddles, personal flotation devices, drinking water and on-site guidance.
Volunteers should arrive by 9:00 a.m., with registration beginning 30 minutes before the cleanup starts. Closed-toe shoes are required, and participants are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle and wear clothing suitable for getting wet. Long sleeves, pants, a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable gloves are also recommended (gloves will be provided if needed).
The event is best suited for teens and adults due to the physical nature of kayaking and potential lifting involved. Double kayaks will be used, and solo volunteers will be paired accordingly. Community service hours are available.
Please note that the cleanup is weather-dependent and may be canceled with 24 hours' notice if conditions are unsafe. Participants who wish to bring their own kayak or paddleboard, or who need help with registration, can contact erin@miamiwaterkeeper.org for assistance.
