Religious and cultural traditions of the African diaspora in colonial Latin America come to life through historical research and storytelling. This Kislak Talks presentation, scheduled for Wednesday, April 9 at the Otto G Richter Library, features scholar Dr. Miguel Valerio sharing insights from his latest studies. His work examines Black lay Catholic brotherhoods and Afro-creole festival practices, along with findings from his acclaimed book Sovereign Joy: Afro-Mexican Kings and Queens, 1539-1640. The evening begins with a welcome reception and refreshments, hosted jointly by the Museum of Art and Design at MDC and the University of Miami's Kislak Center. Visitors can park in any color zone using PayByPhone or Pay Station systems, with the flexibility to move between lots during their session.
