Living Mandala: Art, Mindfulness and Community
Dec 10, 2024 - Dec 14, 2024
Tue-Fri: 11 AM to 5 PM | Sat: 10 AM to 5:30 PM
Witness a centuries-old tradition of intricate artistry and meditation as the monks of Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery craft a sand mandala at the Coral Gables Museum from December 10 to 14. This event offers visitors the opportunity to observe the meticulous creation of a sacred mandala, symbolizing Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Rooted in ancient Buddhist practices, the mandala represents themes of healing, peace and interconnectedness.
The monks will work daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fewell Gallery, showcasing a meditative process that embodies the principles of mindfulness and cultural preservation. The event aligns with the museum’s Art for Healing initiative, highlighting the transformative connection between creativity and well-being.
On December 14, the event culminates with Family Day on Aragon, where visitors can watch the final touches being added to the mandala and learn about its spiritual and cultural significance. This celebration offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with Tibetan Buddhist traditions and reflect on the universal values of compassion and peace.
The event also supports the Gaden Monastery’s mission to share their message of cultural resilience while raising funds to improve their community’s living conditions.
