Matheson/Fairchild Invasive Mangrove Project
Mar 24, 2025
From: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Immerse yourself in coastal ecosystem restoration while gaining hands-on conservation experience at Matheson Hammock Park. The Matheson/Fairchild Invasive Mangrove Project takes place on Monday, March 24, as part of the Miami Climate Week event lineup.
This environmental initiative focuses on removing non-native mangrove species that compete with native vegetation and disrupt the delicate balance of South Florida's coastal habitats. Volunteers will work alongside conservation specialists to improve water flow patterns and strengthen the area's natural resilience against climate impacts.
Throughout the event, participants will learn directly from local experts about the critical ecological functions of mangrove ecosystems, including shoreline protection, water filtration and their role as nurseries for marine species essential to the region's biodiversity.
As a token of appreciation, all registered volunteers will receive complimentary admission to neighboring Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, where they can explore extensive plant collections and exhibitions that highlight climate adaptation strategies.
Participants should come prepared with clothing appropriate for muddy conditions, closed-toe shoes, sun protection and water. Registration is available by emailing duncaj@miamidade.gov, and there is no cost to participate in this community conservation effort.
