Miami Studies Workshop: Oral History Theory and Practice explores LGBTQ+ stories.
Florida International University's Miami Studies Program presents a workshop series on Monday, May 20 at the historic Vizcaya Village Garage. Led by oral history expert Dr. Dan Royles, this free event delves into the techniques of capturing and preserving oral histories, focusing specifically on the LGBTQ+ community and the impact of HIV/AIDS.
The program consists of two workshops and a Q&A session:
Miami Studies Workshop: Introduction to Oral History (1:00 - 2:00 p.m.)
This session provides a foundation for beginners or those needing a refresher. It covers the essentials of oral history, including project planning, equipment use and effective interviewing techniques.
Miami Studies Workshop: Oral Histories of HIV/AIDS (2:30 - 3:30 p.m.)
In partnership with the Miami AIDS Memorials Project, this session explores the specific challenges and methodologies involved in recording oral histories related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It highlights the power of personal stories in shaping understanding and community.
Q&A Session (3:30 - 3:50 p.m.):
This dedicated time allows participants to engage directly with Dr. Royles, ask questions and gain deeper insights into the role of oral history in preserving crucial narratives.
