Miami Waterkeeper: Habitat Restoration with Coastlove
Apr 05, 2025
Starting: 9:30 AM
Help restore native ecosystems while partnering with local environmental champions on Virginia Key's natural landscapes. Habitat Restoration with Coastlove will take place on Tuesday, March 25 at Virginia Key (located at coordinates 25°44'41.4"N 80°08'41.2"W).
This collaborative effort between Miami Waterkeeper, the City of Miami Parks and Recreation and Coastlove nonprofit focuses on practical conservation work to address coastal degradation and preserve biodiversity. Participants will engage in hands-on ecological restoration activities that vary based on current habitat needs.
Volunteer tasks include removing invasive plant species such as Scaevola and Sansevieria, planting native vegetation to enhance biodiversity, transporting debris across uneven terrain and using various gardening tools including loppers, hand clippers and spading forks.
The physical nature of this work, which involves heavy lifting and outdoor labor, makes it most suitable for teenagers and adults. Younger participants must remain under constant supervision by their guardians. Community service hours documentation will be provided for volunteers who require it.
Registration begins 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Participants should bring a refillable water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes, with long sleeves and pants recommended for protection. Volunteers may bring their own work gloves or use those provided by Miami Waterkeeper.
