Orchid Soundscapes with Juraj Kojš
Mar 29, 2025 - Mar 30, 2025
From: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Experience the intersection of nature and sound in an installation that reveals the hidden sonic world of plants. Orchid Soundscapes with Juraj Kojš will be presented at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Miami-based composer and sonic artist Juraj Kojš continues his exploration of music making with orchids through three distinct modules. The first features solar-powered speaker units streaming soundscapes that combine both sonic and ultrasonic recordings of Florida native orchids. Drawing from recent scientific research showing plants can produce high-frequency sounds beyond human hearing range, Kojš uses specialized microphones to capture these typically inaudible plant communications.
Visitors can also interact with the Orchid DNA DJ installation, allowing participants to create unique beats by manipulating orchid DNA sequences through a custom-designed digital music interface. The third component, O-Things, presents a collection of upcycled objects where orchids are mounted on retired sonic media such as speakers, CDs and musical instruments—creating an ecological braiding between plant life and discarded technology.
While the exhibit is self-guided throughout the day, Kojš will perform live at 12:30 p.m. each day, mixing sonic and ultrasonic soundscapes. Attendees can join a guided tour and try the interactive DNA installation during this time. The full exhibit runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, with the performance and guided tour from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
