On Thursday, November 21, the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music presents Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates at Gusman Concert Hall as part of its Signature Series. This Silent Film Night event features Oscar Micheaux’s groundbreaking race film Within Our Gates, the earliest surviving film by an African-American filmmaker, accompanied by Wycliffe Gordon’s original score, Within These Gates of Mine. Directed by Etienne Charles, the performance will include a 20-piece jazz orchestra and vocalists, combining history and music to create a powerful exploration of racial injustice in America.
Wycliffe Gordon is a highly acclaimed jazz musician, composer and educator known for his energetic, traditional hard-swinging style. With a career spanning performances with top jazz artists, over 50 recordings and numerous accolades, Gordon is a leading figure in the jazz world. He currently serves as the director of jazz studies at Augusta University and is a dedicated music educator, giving masterclasses and performances worldwide.
