
Robert Conduru: Afro-Brazilian Spaces of Reinvention

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami will present a public lecture by art historian Roberto Conduru examining Afro-Brazilian urban and artistic practices. The A+RC Public Lecture by Robert Conduru: Afro-Brazilian Spaces of Reinvention will take place on Thursday, May 15.
Conduru will explore how Afro-Brazilian artists have addressed the persistence of slavery-related oppression in Brazilian cities from the late nineteenth century to the present. The lecture highlights how artistic practices—including architecture, landscape design and visual arts—have reimagined and transformed urban spaces. Featured artists include Artur Bispo do Rosário, Arthur Timótheo da Costa, Caetano Dias, Jorge dos Anjos, Heitor dos Prazeres, Mestre Didi, Nêgo, Seu Gabriel, Rubem Valentim and Rommulo Vieira Conceição.
Roberto Conduru is the Endowed Distinguished Professor of Art History at Southern Methodist University and a recognized scholar of Afro-Brazilian art and culture. His publications include Arte Afro-Brasileira and co-editorship of Axé Bahia: The Power of Art in an Afro-Brazilian Metropolis.
