Apr 03, 2025
From: 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Immerse yourself in a captivating evening of experimental cinema where multiple projectors transform a single screen into a complex visual symphony. Roger Beebe: Films for One to Eight Projectors will be presented at the Deering Estate on Thursday, April 3, with doors opening at 7 p.m. This free admission event celebrates filmmaker Roger Beebe's 25 years of touring with a live multi-projector performance.
The program features both new and classic 16mm works alongside essayistic videos, showcasing Beebe's distinctive approach to expanded cinema. Attendees will experience several of his newer creations, including un arbre (2024, 4 x 16mm + video) and Lineage (for Norman McLaren) (2019, 4 x 16mm), as well as his renowned seven-projector piece Last Light of a Dying Star (2008/2011). The performance also includes live-narrated documentaries addressing diverse topics from the emotional vulnerability of men to the racial implications of typography and the physical spaces behind virtual economies.
As a filmmaker, Beebe has presented his work globally in venues ranging from the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square to Antarctica's McMurdo Station, as well as at prestigious institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and Sundance. Currently a Professor in the Departments of Art and Theatre, Film and Media Arts at Ohio State University, Beebe brings decades of experience in experimental filmmaking to this unique presentation.
The event is hosted by the Deering Estate in collaboration with Programming Partner and Project Artist in Residence Barron Sherer as part of his Knight Foundation-invested Moving Image Alliance activities, which focus on fostering appreciation for contemporary moving image art based on legacy cinema practices and technologies.
