Unveiling a personal exploration of the American West, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) presents Rose Marie Cromwell: A Geological Survey through October 27. This exhibition marks the artist's first solo museum show, showcasing her latest body of work created between 2022 and 2023.
Cromwell reinterprets the longstanding tradition of landscape photography through a personal lens. Her series of photographs document a journey through the American West with the artist, her mother and her young daughter, intertwining personal narratives with broader social and ecological themes. Through her compelling visuals, Cromwell engages with the complex history and artistic legacy of the region.
Rose Marie Cromwell is a Miami-based artist who works primarily with photography and video. Her artistic vision explores the interplay between globalization and local experiences, and the often-blurred line between political and spiritual concerns. Cromwell's acclaimed works include her 2018 book, El Libro Supremo de la Suerte, which won the Light Work Photobook Prize and was listed among TIME magazine's 25 Best Photobooks of 2018. Her subsequent publications, Eclipse and A More Fluid Atmosphere, further established her reputation in the art world. Cromwell's work has been exhibited at numerous prestigious venues, including the Aperture Foundation in New York, the High Museum in Atlanta and the Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh. She is a recipient of a Fulbright grant and a Getty Reportage grant, and has been an artist in residence at Light Work and Oolite Arts.
