Explore the spiritual origins of Miami's diverse communities at the HistoryMiami Museum with SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Place, on display from August 23, 2024, to January 26, 2025. This thought-provoking photography exhibition by Woosler Delisfort, a self-taught documentary photographer from Little Haiti, delves into the spiritual origins of Miami’s Indigenous, African and Caribbean communities. Featuring over 100 compelling images, Delisfort captures moments of divine connection in temples, churches and mosques, highlighting how these cultures use sacred spaces as vital sources of life, both politically and spiritually.
The exhibition reveals the significance of sacred spaces as sanctuaries that offer protection, warmth and connection, much like the womb. It showcases how our ancestors and elders understood the necessity of these spaces for human growth and resilience. Sacred spaces serve as places of comfort, assurance and community, but also as centers for revolution, healing and justice, providing strength and unity in a world often marred by injustice and confusion.
Delisfort’s photography invites visitors to witness the human quest for peace and spirituality, manifested through rituals and veneration practices that connect us to deeper spiritual realms. Born and raised in Little Haiti, Delisfort's work aims to replace negative stereotypes with positive, personal images that celebrate joy, life and creative expression.
