Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance
This event has passed.
weekly on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
The Harlem Renaissance, a flourishing era of literary, visual and musical arts spanning the 1920s to the '40s, painted a transformative picture of Black life for the world. "Silhouettes" delves into the role of art during this period, with a specific focus on collaborations between artists and writers in the creation of illustrated books. These works boldly challenged derogatory stereotypes while asserting the capacity for self-determination within the African American community.
Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance is organized by The Wolfsonian-FIU and curated by Christopher Norwood, founder of Hampton Art Lovers. For the exhibition's curation, Norwood consulted with Shawn Christian, professor of English at Florida International University, and Wolfsonian staff. The exhibition is sponsored by Cowles Charitable Trust, Tamara L. Harris Foundation, and Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau Art of Black Miami.
