Florida's oldest established African-American theater troupe, M Ensemble Company, presents the award-winning play "The Girls of Summer" at the Sandrell Rivers Theater on select dates from February 8 through February 25.
Written by Layon Gray, the acclaimed playwright and director of "Kings Of Harlem" and the long-running Off-Broadway hit "Black Angels Over Tuskegee," "The Girls of Summer" is set in 1944 Chicago. The story revolves around a group of African-American women preparing for an exhibition game against the all-white reigning champions, the Rockford Peaches. Just two weeks before the game, the coach of the Black team disappears. Racism, sexism, deceit and betrayal are unveiled as this powerful drama exposes the hidden stories beneath the surface.
