Step into an immersive multimedia environment where art, music and technology converge to create a living, breathing installation. Locust Projects presents Blackstar by Tomas Vu, on view from February 13 through July 19 in the Main Gallery. This monumental intermedia installation, named after David Bowie's final album, centers around an interactive geodesic dome that serves as both canvas and catalyst for visitor engagement.
Drawing inspiration from futurist architect Buckminster Fuller, the installation's geodesic structure becomes a dynamic platform for projection mapping, featuring hexagonal panels that display ever-shifting collages from Vu's extensive archive. Visitors become active participants in shaping the installation's atmosphere through an interactive vinyl sound deck and movement-responsive sensors, creating an environment that embodies Bowie's spirit of artistic reinvention and genre-defying creativity.
Tomas Vu, a Vietnamese-born, New York-based artist and printmaker, brings his distinctive perspective to this ambitious project. His work, informed by themes of memory, displacement and cultural identity, has earned international recognition, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Prize. As a professor at Columbia University's School of Arts and co-founder of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies, Vu continues to push the boundaries of contemporary artistic practice through innovative multidisciplinary approaches.
