Traditional Aztec Dance Ceremony
Feb 22, 2025
From: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Sacred rhythms and ancient traditions come alive as dancers move in harmony, celebrating centuries-old Indigenous ceremonies passed down through generations. The 4th Annual Danza Conchera, a Traditional Aztec Dance Ceremony, will be held at the Vizcaya Village Garage at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens on Saturday, February 22. Led by Tonalxochitl, Indigenous Aztec communities gather to share their cultural heritage through sacred dances, music and rituals.
The ceremony features traditional instruments like the huehuetl and teponaztli drums, accompanied by a ceremonial altar adorned with offerings. This family-friendly event welcomes visitors to experience the sacred circle of life represented through communal dance practices that have endured for millennia. Guests are invited to stay for any duration of the ceremony, with Vizcaya staff available to answer questions and guide participation.
Tonalxochitl, a collective of Indigenous families based in Miami, has spent over 15 years preserving and sharing Mexico's ancestral traditions through educational programs across the East Coast. The Danza de Concheros represents more than just a historical practice – it embodies the ancient Mesoamerican understanding of cycles, equality and harmony with nature, offering valuable insights for contemporary environmental and social awareness.
While the event is free to attend, pre-registration through Eventbrite is encouraged.
