Uncovering the Indigenous Indies: Colonial Cuba
This event has passed.
A groundbreaking historical examination challenges traditional narratives about Indigenous peoples in colonial Cuba and the Greater Antilles. The Uncovering the Indigenous Indies: Colonial Cuba as Case Study presentation, taking place Thursday, March 6 at the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion in Otto G. Richter Library, features Dr. John Paul Paniagua's compelling research on Native survival and identity during the colonial period.
Dr. Paniagua explores how Indigenous communities persisted through the Spanish conquest and colonization, despite facing severe social upheaval and displacement. His research illuminates the complex dynamics between Native populations and Spanish colonial authorities from the 16th to 18th centuries, examining how Indigenous communities maintained and redefined their identities while facing official skepticism about their authenticity. The presentation will also feature commentary by Dr. Traci A. Ardren, followed by an audience discussion.
The University of Miami's Departments of History and Anthropology, along with the Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, are co-sponsors of this event.
