Uncover the unexpected wartime history of Miami Beach at When Miami Beach Went to War on Thursday, January 16, at The Wolfsonian–FIU. This multifaceted event highlights the city’s transformation during World War II from a tourist hotspot into a critical military training hub.
Begin the evening with a guided tour of Boot Camp in Paradise: World War II in Miami Beach, an outdoor exhibition in Lummus Park presented by Galería Ocean Drive. Afterward, return to The Wolfsonian for a library open house featuring Judith Berson-Levison’s Sand in Their Boots archive, a collection of Miami Beach WWII memorabilia. The night concludes with a curated screening of short films from the AV Club, reflecting on the lasting impact of the war.
Organized in partnership with the City of Miami Beach, Galería Ocean Drive, and the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Division of Special Collections & Archives, this free event offers an engaging exploration of the city’s wartime legacy. Registration is required.
