The Dunn's Josephine Hotel is the perfect blend of bed & breakfast, history and comfort for its guests

The Dunn's Josephine Hotel, a relic of Miami’s past, finds it way to the 21st century, bringing rich history back to the forefront. The hotel is located in the heart of Historic Overtown, the once bustling all-black neighborhood during the segregation era of America. Here, the likes of Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Josephine Baker and the likes traversed after traveling the world performing and speaking on the mainstage. Now the Dunn’s Josephine Hotel opens is doors for its guests to enjoy a stay.

The History

Overtown was a fruitful place that quickly retracted at the introduction of integration after the civil rights movement. Wealthy Black Americans left the neighborhood for access to an America they watched from afar but were never privy to firsthand. Eminent domain followed with the construction of the I-95 freeway through the neighborhood, forcing landowners to give up their property to the government for a project that would benefit the masses. Only the most vulnerable of the population were left in the area.

After much work to restore the neighborhood back to what it once was in its heyday, Overtown is making a comeback. Although the faces of the past won’t likely return to the area, the history lies intact. Those who visit will see the visible lines of revitalization in the area. The Sojourn Heritage Brand, founder and owner of the Dunn’s Josephine Hotel, brings the rich multi-cultural history and surrounding communities to each visitor. With incredible design and savory cuisine, this boutique hotel perfects the fusion of bed & breakfast, history and comfort for its guests.

The Rooms

Each room is uniquely catered to honor African American icons, from Aaron Douglas who was the creator of the National Urban League newspaper distributed by the NAACP to Zora Neal Hurston, a famous writer and cultural explorer. Each room brings the essence of the era, style and manner of these historical cultural heroes. With 12 king suites and three double-bed suites, this boutique hotel can sleep up to 30 guests at one time. Great for sorority line meetups, family reunions, church visits, or an intimate couple vacation or staycation.

Enjoy Wi-Fi, cable television and complimentary continental breakfast. The Dunn’s Josephine Hotel also offers a library of historical books for leisurely reading with a glass of complimentary wine. And for those who love to lather their skin in luxurious shea butter, the Dunn’s Josephine has that offering covered upon request.

Arts & Culture

The deep blue walls and shiny floors swirled in mauve and resin set the tranquil tone of vacation. The hotel boasts a second floor art gallery with original works from local and national visual artists. Need a creative space for an intimate meeting? Things To Do

The street is quiet with local offerings a stone’s throw away. Directly to the north lies the newly renovated Overtown Performing Arts Center (OPAC) which hosts private events throughout the year. Just south of the hotel is the business center A Space Called Tribe where visitors can rent a desk space for the day and use all the amenities from the conference room to complimentary tea and snacks in the TRIBE lounge.

Looking for a bite? Groovin’ Bean is just a few minutes away and serves up fresh coffee and hot and cold breakfast options. Lunch lovers can walk over to House of Wings for an effervescent array of flavorful wings or head over to Lil Green House Grill for a delicious plated meal of healthy hearty soul food.

The Dunn’s Josephine Hotel is minutes from the I-95 highway and Downtown Miami sites: The Lyric Theater, AmericanAirlines Arena, Perez Art Museum, the Frost Museum, Adrienne Arsht Center and groovy Wynwood.
