City Theatre is a professional theater company based in Miami with a national reputation for developing and producing short plays. In its 28th season, City Theatre produces an array of programs that reflect and celebrate the Miami community in a variety of venues across the county. Dedicated to producing new works, City Theatre presents innovative year-round programming that excites audiences. The flagship short play festival Summer Shorts and full-length plays as part of the Theater Up Close series, are presented at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. City Theatre celebrates the culture and diversity of Miami through programs such as City Reads, a free play reading series presented in partnership with Books & Books. Homegrown, a program launched to nurture, elevate, and promote emerging playwrights who identify as black, indigenous, and people of color, was launched in 2021. The Short Cuts School Tour engages middle school students through the short play format. City Theatre established its annual National Award for Short Playwrighting Contest to identify, acknowledge, and award excellence in dramatic writing in the short play and musical genre.
