Antonia Eiriz: In the Eye of the Sibyl
Through Apr 30, 2025
From: Noon to 6:00 PM
Discover the artistry of one of Cuba’s most provocative figures at the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora. Antonia Eiriz: In the Eye of the Sibyl, running from December 2024 through April 2025, showcases a curated selection of Eiriz’s works from the 1960s to the 1990s, offering an in-depth exploration of her creative vision and enduring legacy.
Curated by art critic Janet Batet, the exhibition draws inspiration from Batet's essay En el ojo de la Sibila (In the Eye of the Sibyl), which positions Eiriz as an oracle-like figure. Much like the mythical Sibyl, Eiriz’s work serves as a reflection of societal traumas and a forewarning of the consequences of unchecked power. Her evocative art critiques societal oppression, censorship and the disillusionment underlying revolutionary rhetoric, mirroring the mythical Sibyl’s ability to foresee and reflect on the complexities of her time.
Eiriz’s response to censorship was one of resilience and reinvention, creating works that remain deeply relevant and poignant. This exhibition highlights her dual role as both a voice of defiance in her political context and a visionary whose influence tanscends borders and generations.
