Asere Social Club
Feb 28, 2025
From: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Discover the cultural connections between Africa and Cuba through an evening of music, poetry and expert insights at The Wolfsonian–FIU. Asere Social Club, held on Friday, February 28, embraces the spirit of asere, a Cuban Spanish term with West African origins that symbolizes camaraderie and connection. The event will also highlight the African roots of Cuban popular music and its global influence.
The program features performances by the folk and country band Cortadito, the rumba group Irawo Osa, and poets Román Díaz and Adrian Castro. Wolfsonian research fellow Ivor Miller will provide expert commentary, offering a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural fusion inherent in Cuban music.
Presented in partnership with Community Arts and Culture as part of the 27th annual Afro Roots Fest, this event is supported by the City of Miami Beach, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Library of America.
