Bio’Ngo: A Scenic Installation
This event has passed.
Presented by FUNDarte, Lukas Avendaño’s Bio’Ngo is a compelling site-specific installation and performance that seamlessly blends Mexican and Miami cultures. This two-night engagement at the Sandrell Rivers Theater on August 23 and 24 offers a multisensory exploration of identity, environment and cultural heritage.
Bio'Ngo is a scenic installation that uses tautology to remind us of the often-ignored yet vital "fault of origin" or "original sin." The exhibition highlights the inherent value of something we often dismiss in favor of our insatiable desires. As it honors the vastness of this concept, Bio'Ngo explores a spectrum of manifestations, from vibrant colors to monochromatic shades, and from silence to the distinct sounds of insects, leaves, and birds.
Developed through a two-year partnership with Contenidos Artisticos, Bio’Ngo features a dynamic collaboration between Avendaño and Miami-based dancers Charlene Francois, Enrique Villacreces, Lize Lotte Pitlo and José Ramón Corral. Centered around the striking Bio’Ngo sculptural installation, the performance immerses audiences in a world of stunning Everglades footage by Javier Labrador, intricate nest installations by Celia Ledon and original music by Yissy Garcia.
Bio’Ngo is part of FUNDarte’s Out in the Tropics series, showcasing bold and innovative artists exploring themes of gender, sexuality, and LGBTQIA+ identity.
Lukas Avendaño, an emerging Mexican artist, is renowned for his provocative performances challenging traditional representations of Mexican identity. Born in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Avendaño embodies the complex identity of the muxes, or homosexual men of his region. His work blends ritual dances, personal narratives and audience interaction to illuminate the multifaceted experiences of pain, loneliness and self-affirmation within a culture often perceived as gay-friendly.
