Black History Month Reception: One Night Stand!
Feb 20, 2025
From: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Experience the enduring musical legacy of Miami's historic Overtown neighborhood through the lens of contemporary photography. One Night Stand!, opening Thursday, February 20 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Historic Ward Rooming House, showcases Greg Clark's portraits of local musicians against the backdrop of this culturally significant district.
This Black History Month reception, presented by Hampton Art Lovers, connects past and present through Clark's intimate photographs, while paying tribute to Overtown's pivotal role in American music history. The exhibition draws inspiration from Sam Cooke's legendary 1963 recording at the Harlem Square Club, which later became one of music's most celebrated live albums.
In partnership with FIU Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab, the exhibition preserves oral histories from local musicians of the 1960s and 70s, documenting an era when venues like the Rockland, Palace and Cotton Club made Overtown a thriving center of soul music. Clark's contemporary portraits capture local musicians among the transformed landscape of former entertainment venues, creating a visual dialogue between Overtown's past and present.
The reception, sponsored by OneUnited Bank and S.E. Overtown/Park West CRA, features refreshments from Elleven Vodka and Duke & Dame Whiskey. Additional support comes from Impact Edition, Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs and Crown Street Films.
