Apr 11, 2025
From: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
An evening of performance art and academic discourse examines the intersection of race, gender and movement. Black Queer Dance: Gay Men and the Politics of Passing for Almost Straight will take place at the Coral Gables Museum on Friday, April 11
This multifaceted event features Dr. Mark Broomfield, Associate Professor of English and Founding Director of Performance as Social Change at SUNY Geneseo. Dr. Broomfield will present a live dance performance followed by a discussion of his new book that explores the complex relationship between dance, identity and societal expectations.
The program includes a dialogue between Dr. Broomfield and Professor Gentry George, Artistic Director of Zest Collective and Professor of Dance at Miami Dade College's New World School of the Arts. Their conversation will delve into the book's themes, offering perspectives on how movement and performance intersect with cultural identity.
Attendees will have opportunities to engage with both scholars during an interactive Q&A session. The event concludes with a wine and cheese reception and book signing, allowing for informal conversations with the presenters.
