From: 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Experience the heartfelt story of a group of elders who come together for Friday night karaoke in San Juan’s evolving Calle Loíza district. The "Casa Laurel" Screening & Karaoke Party takes place on Wednesday, April 16 at Ball & Chain.
Hosted by South Florida PBS, this event features a special screening of Casa Laurel, a documentary by Pati Cruz presented as part of PBS’s Homegrown: A Part Of/Apart From digital-first series. The film highlights how music strengthens community bonds amid the challenges of gentrification.
The evening begins with a pre-screening reception including live music, drinks and light bites. Following the screening, guests are invited to join a Q&A session with filmmaker Pati Cruz. The night ends with a karaoke party celebrating the elders of Calle Loíza.
Homegrown: A Part Of/Apart From is a collaborative project from Firelight Media, Pacific Islanders in Communications, Black Public Media and Latino Public Broadcasting. The series centers voices from U.S. territories and Hawai‘i, exploring themes of cultural identity, sovereignty and belonging.
This event is free and open to the public.
