Celebrate Juneteenth at the Historic Dana A. Dorsey House on Wednesday, June 19, with a day full of engaging activities and cultural experiences for all ages. Hosted by Miami Urban Contemporary Experience (MUCE), this event promises a memorable celebration of freedom and community. Throughout the day, savor food from Reeds Seafood and cool off with treats from Mr. Frosty305, while kicking back to beats by DJ Mack. Participate in art activities, including a community art mural, and catch a live musical performance by Miami-based hip hop artist King Tetrus.
Festivities kick off with a focus on literacy (Keep the Kids Reading), featuring engaging story time sessions led by children's authors, King Rod Royal and a mobile Bookleggers library trailer stocked with books to explore. The afternoon transitions into Rhyme & Reason, a program that includes a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring artist Anthony Lumpkin. The panel will explore the intersection of art, culture and community, with a focus on banned books and censorship. This will be followed by the unveiling of Lumpkin's new artwork along with a live drum circle and a live podcast by Fara Charles offering unique insights and conversations.
The ongoing exhibition On The Ban Wagon: The Power of The Pen will also be on display. The exhibit sheds light on the ongoing struggle with censorship, inviting visitors to engage in critical reflection and celebrate the importance of intellectual freedom.
