What is Copa America?
Copa America dates back to 1916, when Uruguay beat Argentina in the finals. Copa America is one of the most significant sporting events in the world, as the national teams of soccer powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile square off against teams from North America and the Caribbean for Western Hemisphere supremacy.
Who is playing in Copa America?
In 2024, competing teams will include the 10 member countries of the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (South American Football Confederation, or CONMEBOL): Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The tournament will also include six teams from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). This year, those will be Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, the United States and two to-be-determined countries.
Argentina and Uruguay have won the most Copa Americas, with 15 each, and Brazil has won nine. Every CONMEBOL team except Ecuador and Venezuela has won at least one Copa America, and no team from outside South America has ever won. Mexico was the only non-South American team to even make the finals, in 1993 and 2001. The last Copa America winner was Argentina in 2021; it beat Brazil in the final, 1-0.
When is Copa America?
The CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 will begin on June 20, when Argentina takes on a to-be-determined CONCACAF team in Atlanta, Georgia. Group stage play will take place in 14 venues nationwide, ranging from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Other host cities include Orlando, Las Vegas, Houston, Kansas City and, of course, Miami.
