Fabric and Folklore: A Celebration of Haitian Heritage
This event has passed.
Enjoy an interactive storytime experience with your little one(s) at the Haitian Heritage Month edition of the Pérez Art Museum's monthly series - PAMM Art Storytime - on Saturday, May 25. This free event will draw inspiration from Myrlande Constant’s artwork, Invocation for Saint Anthony, on display in PAMM's permanent collection.
The storytime experience will begin with a short tour of the museum galleries, encouraging young minds to make observations and use their imaginations. This will be followed by a session of folklore storytelling. Visitors will hear a reading of Louloup Louloup!, a bilingual sound book of Haitian rhymes and games by Emanna Louis. The experience will culminate in a participatory drum circle led by the local Haitian dance performance group, Tradisyon Lakou Lakay. Finally, attendees will have the opportunity to explore "drapo," decorative fabric banners, using fabric tools to investigate the elements of color, pattern and sewing techniques.
PAMM Art Storytime takes place every fourth Saturday of the month. Intended for 3-5 year olds in the company of a parent or guardian, PAMM Art Storytime builds upon the foundations of literacy. Young learners can participate in a gallery tour facilitated by a PAMM teaching artist and an art-related storybook reading followed by a hands-on activity. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.
