Prepare to experience Carmen like never before as the Florida Grand Opera presents Georges Bizet's classic tale, reimagined under the direction of Maria Todaro. Set against the turbulent backdrop of Franco's Spain in 1937, this production brings new depth to the story by portraying Carmen and her band of Gypsies as brave freedom fighters. While remaining true to the original libretto, Todaro's interpretation explores themes of race, social class and gender, all through the lens of political unrest.
Carmen, a fiercely independent woman working in a Seville cigarette factory, refuses to conform, loving who she wants without compromise. Her counterpart, Escamillo, is more than just a bullfighter; he is a secret supporter of the liberation cause, embodying the spirit of Spain. In contrast, Don José, trapped by toxic masculinity and familial obligations, becomes increasingly consumed by jealousy, leading to his eventual downfall. His obsession with Carmen drives him to abandon his principles and, ultimately, to a tragic end.
Performed in French with English and Spanish translations projected, Carmen will take center stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center on April 12, 13, and 15, 2024.
