From Bach to Bonds
Apr 19, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
A program of sacred music will explore the intersection of Baroque composition and African American spiritual traditions through the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Margaret Bonds. From Bach to Bonds takes place on Saturday, April 19 at Sanctuary of the Arts, presented by the New Canon Chamber Collective.
The evening includes selections from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Bonds’s Simon Bore the Cross, a mid-20th century cantata that reframes the biblical story of Simon of Cyrene through the lens of Black spirituals. Though separated by time and tradition, both works reflect themes of faith, sacrifice and endurance.
Performed by voices and instruments of the New Canon Chamber Collective, the concert offers a reflective experience that connects two distinct yet resonant approaches to sacred storytelling through music.
