The Historic Hampton House Museum of Culture & Art is the only Green Book Hotel museum that exists in the world to date. With one of the most highly curated collection of dynamic artists from the diaspora the museum opens its galleries during Miami Art Week 2023. with its inaugural exhibition Gimme Shelter. The exhibition chooses to celebrate the history of this iconic site, as not only a safe space but a sacred space for shelter-- a place of warmth, hospitality and community -- a site of congregation for Blacks and people of color despite the threats of violence in a segregated city. Icons of music, art, entertainment and political activism could come together to rest, relax, party and not only push culture forward but pushed Miami and America forward toward committing to the fulfilment of rights of the US Constitution for all people.
Artists will include: Derrick Adams, Terry Adkins, Lisa Anne Auerbach, Sadie Barnette, Sanford Biggers, Zoe Buckman, Nick Cave, Charles Gaines, Lauren Halsey, Barkley Hendricks, Amanda Ross-Ho, Steffani Jemison, Bronwyn Katz, Maia Ruth Lee, Kerry James Marshall, Patrick Martinez, Jared McGriff, Howardena Pindell, Paul Pfeiffer, Bony Ramirez, Devin Reynolds, Lorna Simpson, Warith Taha, Naama Tsabar, Fulton Leroy Washington and Carrie Mae Weems. Also in the Exhibition, works by Reginald O’Neal, Jared McGriff paintings, Natalia Arbelaez, Sydnie Jimenez, Moises Salazar and Mazika Temba, Mark Bradford, Milo Matthieu, Dylan Rose Rheingold and Henry Taylor;
In addition, a special tribute and presentation of 99 year-old painter Richard Mayhew’s landscapes Gallery 11am-6pm
