Indigo & Shibori: A Hands-On Organic Dye Workshop
Apr 10, 2025
Two sessions: 6:00 PM and 7:45 PM
Dive into the ancient art of natural fabric dyeing with a hands-on cultural experience that connects traditional techniques with contemporary creativity. Indigo & Shibori: A Hands-On Organic Dye Workshop takes place on Thursday, April 10 and Thursday, May 8, with two sessions available each day at 6:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. at the Vizcaya Village Garage. This engaging workshop is part of Vizcaya's AgriCulture Nights: Connect & Create series, which celebrates the relationship between people and plants.
Participants will learn the Japanese Shibori resist dyeing technique—a method with over 1,300 years of history—to create their own unique indigo-dyed bandana. The workshop, led by Miami-based designer and educator Veronica Buitron, offers insights into indigo's global significance, from its antibacterial properties valued in traditional Japanese textiles to its role in sustainable practices.
The workshop costs $10 for adults and is free for children 12 and under. All necessary materials are provided, including natural indigo dye, cotton bandanas and tools for various folding and tying techniques. This accessible experience takes place exclusively at Vizcaya Village, the estate's historic farm area, and provides a perfect opportunity for community members to connect with nature, history and their own creativity, regardless of previous experience.
