Indigo & Shibori: A Hands-On Organic Dye Workshop
May 08, 2025
Two sessions: 6:00 PM and 7:45 PM
Explore the ancient art of natural fabric dyeing in a hands-on workshop that bridges traditional Japanese techniques with modern creativity. Indigo & Shibori: A Hands-On Organic Dye Workshop will be held on Thursday, May 8, with two sessions available at 6:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. at the Vizcaya Village Garage. This interactive experience is part of Vizcaya’s AgriCulture Nights: Connect & Create series, which celebrates the deep connections between people and plants.
Participants will learn the Japanese Shibori resist dyeing method—a technique with over 1,300 years of history—to create their own indigo-dyed bandana. Led by Miami-based designer and educator Veronica Buitron, the workshop also explores the cultural and ecological significance of indigo, from its antibacterial qualities in traditional Japanese textiles to its relevance in sustainable practices.
The cost is $10 for adults, and free for children 12 and under. All materials are included, such as natural indigo dye, cotton bandanas and tools for folding and tying techniques. Held in Vizcaya Village—the estate’s historic farm area—this accessible and enriching experience invites participants of all skill levels to connect with nature, history and their own creativity.
