From: 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
Step back in time to experience the soul-stirring sounds that once echoed through Overtown's vibrant nightlife scene. Hampton Art Lovers presents Jazz Under a Simple Tree, Live @ Harlem Square (1963) on Thursday, April 24 at the Historic Ward Rooming House.
The evening features Miami's acclaimed Old Skool Gang performing Sam Cooke's groundbreaking live album recorded in Overtown in 1963. This tribute celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month by honoring a pivotal recording that captures the intersection of jazz, blues and rhythm & blues—musical traditions that have shaped American cultural history.
For over 13 years, the Old Skool Gang has impressed audiences with their vocal talent and dynamic performances, sharing stages with legendary acts including The Temptations, The O'Jays and Frankie Beverly & Maze. The ensemble features Paul Lewis, Darrick Gaye, Craig Edwards and James "JT" Taylor on vocals, complemented by a stellar band with Bobby Verrastro (guitar), Roderick Hollomon (alto saxophone), Alex Dean (tenor saxophone), Moses Talbot (keyboards), Jenay Wish (drums) and Robert Carter (bass guitar).
Don't miss this opportunity to honor jazz's rich heritage through a faithful recreation of Sam Cooke's historic performance.
