Discover the transformation of a historic Miami landmark through a blend of poetry, painting and typography at The Wolfsonian–FIU. Mapping Trajectories by Rosemarie Chiarlone, on view from February 1 to May 4, reimagines the journey of the Bridge Tender House, originally located at the 27th Avenue crossing of the Miami River and now a striking structure on Washington Avenue outside the museum.
Chiarlone uses the Bridge Tender House as a canvas, filling its windows with abstract and vividly colored aerial maps. The exhibit also includes her artist book, Tender, displayed in the museum lobby, and a newsprint tabloid featuring a poem that visitors can take home. Known for exploring the boundaries of human connection, Chiarlone’s work frequently reflects the evolving landscape of Miami through artist books, works on paper and installations.
About the Bridge Tender House
Designed by architects Harrington & Cortelyou, the Art Deco-style Bridge Tender House was dedicated as the Josephine Baker Pavilion and originally served as one of two stainless-steel structures on the Northwest 27th Avenue Bridge over the Miami River after its 1939 expansion. Saved from demolition during the bridge’s reconstruction, the house was donated to The Wolfsonian in 1993. Now located in front of the museum on Washington Avenue, it frequently hosts contemporary art installations.
